While the film has recently been brought to the limelight due to the untimely death of co-star Heath Ledger, fans may be wondering why there hasn’t been much marketing in traditional advertising mediums, such as television, thus far. This can be attributed to the majority of The Dark Knight marketing, as well as the marketing for many other films and albums as of late, taking place on the Internet in a variety of “viral” forms. The Internet marketing campaign behind The Dark Knight consists of a number of Web sites, all existing in the same universe as the film. Rather than the traditional trailer, quotes from a couple of critics, and some hastily put-together desktop backgrounds, the Blair Witch Web site detailed the search for the missing filmmakers with fake news clippings and video reports. The film’s use of Internet advertising was effective due to its originality, and is widely credited for a great deal of the film’s initial success. read more
